| awesome apps | 08.09.2010 |
It's been just over 4 months since I first got my iPad and the more I use it, the more I love it. I've been using my laptop less and less and using my iPad more and more. I read books, watch TV shows & movies. I show off my work... my portfolio looks great on the iPad and I even have done slideshows during wedding receptions on it. It's also great for email (easier to type than the iPhone), web surfing and social networking. I bring my iPad with me just about everywhere and flying with the iPad is even better (my laptop rarely makes plane rides anymore). In addition to the wonderful apps that are included on every iPad, here are some of my must have apps:

Flipboard - I first tweeted about this when it launched a couple of weeks ago, and this has become one of my favorite iPad apps. Flipboard is basically a personalized, social magazine. It hooks into your Facebook & Twitter accounts and also lets you choose other topics of interest to you and you can virtually turn the pages to see the latest headlines. Each morning when I wake up, I usually grab my iPad and take a stroll through Flipboard to see what's going on in my world. If you have an iPad, you have to get this app!
Square- This is another powerful app. It works on my iPad & iPhone and allows me to take credit cards for payments wherever I am. I've only used it a couple of times so far, but it's awesome. You have to sign up at their website to get the free dongle... it may take a while to get one so be patient.
Evernote- I just recently started using Evernote to help me "remember everything". I have so many ideas running around in my head and I often feel overwhelmed. Evernote helps me collect those thoughts, ideas, web clippings, email, photos, voice memos, etc, etc... all in one spot. I have the app for my desktop, and also have in on my iPhone & iPad. They all sync with each other with a free account on Evernote.com
Things- I've been using Things for a few years now. It helps me keep track of my many projects, and it syncs with my iPad/iPhone version as well, so no matter where I am at, I can check and edit my action items, to dos, and keep my projects on track.
OmniGraffle- I use this program to make rough drafts & sketches for our [ b ] School 2.0 ideas. It's great for layout & design ideas. When I am done, I email a pdf of my draft to my design team so they can do it for real.
iBooks- My favorite new way to read books. The screen is gorgeous, the ability to bookmark & highlight is very helpful and it also has a new feature to organize and read PDFs. It's one of my most used apps.
ABC Player- Awesome! I can watch full episodes of just about any ABC show for free. I just wish CBS, NBC & Fox would make similar apps.
Photogene- This app isn't going to replace Photoshop any time soon, but it does come in handy when I want to massage any images on my iPad before I blog them or tweet them. It'll come in very handy in my upcoming trips to Burning Man and India. It has the ability to adjust curves and levels, not to mention color correct, contrast adjust, cropping and other photo enhancing tools.
Poker 1 on 1 from Vanessa Rousso is my favorite poker game of late. It helps me practice my heads up game and is fairly realistic how poker is played.
Also, here are a few iPhone apps that I also love:
Do it (Tomorrow)- Of course I use Things to manage my projects and to dos, but this is a great little program for the little things. I tend to be a procrastinator, so this app just handles to do items for today and tomorrow. Whatever you don't finish today, automatically gets moved to tomorrow. The best part it's free.
Insight- We use Basecamp to track our progress on [ b ] School 2.0, and while the basecamp website works just fine on my iPad, it's a little small on my iPhone, so this app comes in handy to follow along.
Two apps from DirecTv... NFL Super Cast allows me to watch all NFL games on my iPhone and the DirecTv app allows me to record programs from wherever I am should I forget to set my DVR (happens all the time).
What are some of your favorite apps that you can't live with out?
