walk barry bonds 06.22.2007

A while back, I saw a website called walkbarrybonds.com (it hasn't been updated in a while that's why I didn't link to it) and I thought it was very interesting. They basically suggested that every team facing Barry Bonds should just walk him, so that he can't hit home runs and get any more records. Not a bad plan, eh? If it's a close game, it may actually be the smart thing to do so he doesn't jack one out, but if the game situation doesn't call for it, I am against walking him without a proper strategic reason because it hurts the integrity of the game.

As of today, Barry is sitting on 748 career home runs. As long as he stays healthy... he'll most certainly break Hank Aarons all time mark of 756 and I am in the camp who feel that there should be an asterisk by his name in the record book because of his "alleged" steroid use (or admitted use depending on whether you believe him about not knowing exactly what clear cream he rubbed on his ass). Sound like he's using the "I didn't inhale" defense. In Boston last week, some clever fans painted a giant * on a white bed sheet and held it up when Barry was at bat and of course ESPN showed it every time went to bat.

On the other hand... I really kinda feel sorry for people like Barry Bonds. No matter how many fans he has, he also has people who absolutely hate him and want him to fail, and that has to take a toll on ones mental well being. I also believe in the American way and that one is innocent until proven guilty (except OJ). It just is very interesting/suspicious to hear all the rumors, theories and speculation.

FWIW, I don't think he is currently using steroids. There is too much attention on him and if he tested positive, people would crucify him. When baseball started cracking down on steroids a few years ago, and he took most of the season off with a knee injury... that would have been the perfect time to get the stuff out of his system (if it was in there in the first place).
Oh yeah, Sammy Sosa hit his 600th home run the other day. YAAAAAAWWWWNNNNNNN! He's only the 5th person in the history of baseball to achieve that milestone. C*o*n*g*r*a*t*u*l*a*t*i*o*n*s*! If he makes it into the Hall of Fame, there needs to be an asterisk by his name as well since he was caught cheating by corking his bat. We'll never know how many homers he hit with a loaded bat, not to mention his alleged steroid use. Ken Griffey Jr. is just 18 home runs away from 600 and I will be very excited when Jr. gets it.

Any baseball fans have thoughts they'd like to share with the class?
The song of the day is that catchy tune from the Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah" on:
