20 years of [ b ]

12.21.2018
On December 21, 1998, I went to the Main Place mall in Santa Ana, California to meet up with one of my clients who's wedding I would be photographing the following May.

We met up at the pretzel stand in the food court and he presented me with a few different logo options that he had been working on for my photography brand. One of those treatments was the [ b ] logo that all of my blog readers should be quite familiar with.

But let me back up for a second and tell you the rest of the story.

In February of that year, I shot the wedding of Seth & Jenni Beasley (who I am happy to report, celebrated their 20th anniversary earlier this year!).

Seth & Jenni had over 400 guests at their wedding and most of them were young! They still hold the record for sending me referrals. I shot over 20 weddings for couples who were guests at the Beasley wedding over the next couple of years.

I met one couple in August of that year at a Starbucks. We had a great meeting and they loved my work.

The groom called me a day or two after the meeting and said they wanted to hire me, but they couldn't afford me, but he pointed out that I needed a new logo, and he was going to do it, and we were going to trade services.

I loved that he didn't ask me if that would work for me... he simply told me that it was going to happen!

I loved his confidence and agreed immediately as I was in the market for a new logo.

That groom was Tim Holmes of Reddoor Creative.

To me, the [ b ] logo is much more than a logo. It really is a symbol of my identity... my personal brand and I think it will always be a part of me. I don't have any tattoos, but if I were ever to get one... it would be the [ b ] logo (i have no plans to ever get a tattoo... just not my thing).

Here are a few of my early business cards. The one with the film strip was my first card ever. They were a high school graduation gift from a family friend, then when I ran out, the one on the top left was the first cards I made for myself. The green block letters were my version of knocking off the Oakley sunglasses logo, and the brown logo, was simply my handwriting, that a girl I was dating turned into a logo for me.

The [ b ] logo was all about simplicity (kinda like my style of photography).

Also, not many people notice this... but if you look at the logo, it's kind of in the shape of a camera. Did that just blow your mind?!?!?!

I had these metal business cards made in 2005 I believe and I still use them today (and plan on always using them). No phone number, no email address, just my logo and my website. They don't even say anything about photography... which is convenient as I have been focusing on weight loss coaching lately and these cares will work for that as well.

Over the years there have been many versions of the [ b ] logo...

Here are some early screencaps of my first Flash website (don't judge!):

Then a new version was used for The [ b ] School:

The again for [ b ] School 2.0

I use it on all sorts of t-shirts:

And the logo for my personal work:

Anytime the letter b, of the work "be" was used, I usually substituted it with [ b ] and so did other photographers:

I don't recall who this is, but I can assure you it wasn't my [ b ]aby!

I met up with some photographers before my first trip to Fenway and they made me a sign in case I got on TV:

People used to bring me all kinds of customized treats (back when I ate this kind of junk food):

Even the legendary Jerry Ghionis, a personal hero of mine, was rocking the [ b ]rand!

My friends had some custom poker chips made for me:

Who could ever forget the infamous pimp chalice that someone bedazzled for me (unfortunately it got ruined in the dishwasher)

Then there was the Super [ b ] logo.

I put the logo on everything. (btw, I loved the flip camera... it was awesome, then the iPhones started doing video and they became unnecessary):

I used to deliver my high-resolution images on custom flash drives before we switched to digital download:

We even used the [ b ] logo when we announced our first pregnancy:

More of my business collateral:

Property of The [ b ] School:

I used to send out a postcard every month as a part of my "what do you want to [ b ]" series:

I used it in Keynotes

A friend sent me some cufflinks that I still wear to every wedding (although they're getting pretty scuffed up if anyone wants to send me a fresh pair!)

More desserts:

Tim made me this painting on the 10th anniversary of the [ b ] logo, so now the painting is 10 years old and it still hangs prominently in my office.

Dang... here I am 10 years ago. Here's a perfect opportunity to plug my weight loss coaching services .

I carved my logo into a tree at my favorite campsite and went back and found it several years later:

And finally... the [ b ] logo on toast!

If anyone is looking for a last minute gift idea for me (hint to my wife)... I've always wanted to get a custom branding iron with the [ b ] logo on it. I don't care if it arrives before Christmas, but I'd love to brand my steaks and burgers with the [ b ]
