so stoked to be home! looking forward to my own bed, shower & fast internet connection. although, i want to go to SXSW, but i have a wedding | Follow me
Hey there! My name is Becker and I am a wedding photographer from Orange County, California who specializes in capturing relaxed portraits, amazing details and real moments for the coolest brides and grooms on the planet.
This blog follows both my personal and professional life, and features images from the weddings I shoot, the places I travel and the friends and family members that mean so much to me. It's basically like my own personal photo album combined with an information source for my current and potential clients and a source of inspiration and education for other photographers. This site is a little more informal and I just want to give everyone a sense of who I am, and what I am all about. Thanks for visiting.
Last night I hosted a little shin dig to watch the Cowboys vs. Packers game and to play some cards. What says "the holidays" like football and gambling?
Of course the Cowboys won and locked up the first NFC playoff slot and are favored to have home field advantage as long as they are still in the playoffs. I was so happy about the win that I didn't even mind that I got knocked out of the poker tournament so early. I couldn't catch a hand all night.
I love this time of year. Holiday parties are super fun. I have some fun things coming up next month and I look forward to the traditions and spending time with friends and family.
Check out this ornament Jessica picked up for me:
Caden was all in:
(Don't get me started on why the little man was wearing a Packer's jersey - Matt was obviously trying to push my buttons. And don't get me wrong, I like the cheese heads and the rest of the Packers just fine, so long as they aren't playing the Boys!)
And when it was all said and done shortly before 2am, Victor caught an Ace on the flop to knock off Dane and his pocket 2's:
Thanks to everyone who came last night. I am looking forward to playing again real soon!
I shot Alex & Brandi's wedding back in 2001 and I've been shooting there family portraits every year since. They have a new addition this year, and we just headed down to the beach for a few relaxed portraits.
"No, I said hug your brother Ashton, not choke him!"
Just another reminder to all of my clients. Tomorrow is the last day to order reprints and enlargements to guaranty holiday delivery and to take advantage of the 10% discount. We will still take holiday card orders until Dec 14th, but there is no discount and you'll be cutting it close to get them back in time for Christmas.
The sun is out, the birds are chirping and life is good at the [ b ] pad in beautiful Mission Viejo, California.
No, I did not just win the lottery, but I may as well have.
The kinds folks at DirecTv have just finished installing my brand new HD satellite dish, as well as upgrading my DVR's to accommodate all the new HD channels that DirecTv has recently launched and will be launching in the near future.
And the best part is, is was absolutely free!!
I can't tell you how impressed I am that they just called me up to let me know that "there's some new free stuff... thanks for being a loyal customer, enjoy your new HD programming". I didn't have to sign a long term contract (even though I would have in a heartbeat... there's no way I'd ever switch back to cable).
The only bummer is the DVR service is no longer through Tivo, but it works essentially the same.
New channels include: FSN HD (for the Angel games in beautiful High-Def), Fx, Bravo, CNN, Cinemax, A bunch of other HBO and Showtime feeds, USA, TBS, and many more.
I know it's a little odd to be excited over something so trivial, but once you watch shows in HD, you just can't go back to SD. Plus I live alone and my TV is my friend! ;)
As a wedding photographer, I hear the same songs over and over at each and every wedding and a few of them make me want to go postal and choke the DJ. Of course, I alway exercise restraint, but it's getting harder and harder every week.
Here are a few that I really test my self control:
The YMCA
any version of The Electric Slide
We Are Family
Anything from the B52's
Thankfully these two haven't been played in a while:
The Chicken Dance
The Macarena
To all my other wedding photographer friends, what songs are you sick of hearing at weddings?
Reminder to my clients: You just have until this Friday to order reprints, enlargements and holiday cards in order to get them in time for the Holidays.
Dude, have y'all seen that new Bud Light campaign where the guys just say "dude" with a bunch of different tones and inflections to show how one word can mean so many different things? I say "dude" all the time in all kinds of different situations and that commercial cracks me up. I am still not going to drink Bud Light, but at least they entertain me during the rare times I watch live TV and don't skip through the commercials.
(Thanks for the link Luke)

I don't have another wedding until New Years Eve. It's kind weird to have so much free time on my hands. I'm looking forward to get going on the [ b ] school, plus another new exciting project to benefit photographers that I'll be sharing in the new year.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am going to get a live Christmas Tree later this week. I haven't had a real one in a long time. I am really looking forward to the holidays even more this year. Cade is old enough to know what's going on and its going to be a blast spoiling him again this year.

Speaking of the holidays, this is the time of year that is inevitably linking with giving and sharing, and I wanted to remind folks about Thirst Relief, International. I donated some mentoring sessions earlier this year to raise money for a very worthy cause and wanted to remind people about it at this time of the year. (I've attached their holiday letter at the bottom of this post but you can donate here at any time).

I love the quote on the bottom of their flyer from Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world - Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
It reminds me of the awesome Apple spot "Here's to the Crazy Ones" that says "the people that are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do"

I am loving that the Angels have picked up Torii Hunter and Jon Garland, even though I hate to see Orlando Cabrera go. If they pick up Miguel Cabrera, that would be pretty awesome though. I may have to order season tickets again to see that line up more often.

Attention Photographers in Southern California: In case you missed the memo, next Wednesday, December 5th, Leather Craftsmen is sponsoring the 7th annual holiday pizza party at Robert Evans' place in Universal City. Ira asked me to spread the word to all that are interested in coming. He just asks that you email him your RVSP so he knows how much pizza to order. Send a note to: ira at leathercraftsmen dot com and he'll reply with the exact time and directions. It should be a good time as per usual and I hope to see you there.

I am really looking forward to the Cowboys vs. Green Bay game this coming Thursday. It could be a preview of the NFC championship game. I actually found myself rooting for the Eagles last night. They almost pulled off an upset. At least it was an entertaining game to watch.

During the summer, I used to post a song of the day but stopped because it was kind of a pain. But I've decided to add the Album of the week during the Misc Monday posts. This week you should get the 20th anniversary remastered version of The Joshua Tree which is probably the greatest album of all time. It includes some remixes and previously unreleased tracks. Get it on:

261.4 I even lost a pound or two despite stuffing myself silly on Thanksgiving. The bike rides are getting easier. I have to go further.

Who says we don't have fall foliage on the west coast? Ok, so it's not as exciting as back east, but we had some nice light for yesterday's family portrait session.
I met the bride to be at a wedding I photographed in 1999. She was the maid of honor and I thought she was gorgeous. But what really blew me away was her speech. It was thoughtful, sincere and very well delivered. She made people laugh and cry all inside of a few minutes. Smart and Beautiful... that's a good combo! I gave her my card and made her promise to call me the second she got engaged. I have since bumped into her at another wedding she referred to me in 2003, and now it's her turn.
You know its going to be a good shoot when you get this kind of image within 5 seconds of starting to shoot:
Here area few more relaxed portraits:
I can't wait to shoot their wedding in Aspen next year.
